About this Course

Over the past few decades, it has become commonplace to think about the energy efficiency of the buildings we create during the design phase. More recently, the analysis has expanded to include the impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate. AIA has made the commitment of working toward carbon neutral buildings as a cornerstone of the AIA 2030 Challenge. How will your next project contribute to greenhouse gas reduction and support this AIA goal? What can you do to include decarbonization in your design goals? What changes are happening in the energy industry that will affect how buildings use energy and how will these changes affect design decisions? In this presentation we will illustrate steps you can take to achieve these objectives.

Instructor Bio

Kyle Kriete

Kyle Kriete is a Deputy Program Manager focused on implementing the statewide new construction California Energy Design Assistance (CEDA) program as well as the PG&E Government and K-12 retrofit program. He works with design teams to promote electrification and decarbonization in new construction and retrofitting existing municipalities and school districts. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and an MBA from Pepperdine.

Objectives

The objective of this training series is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  1. Comprehend climate impacts and quantify project greenhouse gas emissions
  2. Understand emerging trends in the energy industry that will impact built environment design and progress to carbon neutral design
  3. Explore ways scorecards can be used to help track progress toward reaching carbon neutrality across a portfolio of buildings
  4. Identify ways the project team—owner, architect and engineer—can collaborate from early design through construction and into building operation to achieve the goals of greenhouse gas reduction
