SUMMARY:AIAOC Lunch Hour Webinar - Heat Pumps 101: How They Work and Why They’re Critical for Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:Join CEDA as we partner with AIA Orange County to present Heat Pumps 101: How They Work and Why They’re Critical for Decarbonization! \nCourse Description\nAs California advances toward its goal of six million installed heat pumps by 2030\, the building industry is redefining how design decisions drive decarbonization and high-performance outcomes. This course explores how heat pumps serve as a cornerstone technology in reducing carbon emissions\, improving occupant safety\, and enhancing resilience across a range of building types. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how heat pumps work\, why their design and selection matter\, and how various system types—such as air-source\, water-source\, and heat pump water heaters—support energy-efficient\, low-carbon buildings. The session will also address common misconceptions about performance and reliability\, highlight non-energy benefits\, and outline how design teams can support heat pump adoption in collaboration with clients and contractors. By connecting technology\, design\, and real-world application\, this course equips participants to confidently advocate for heat pump technology\, question misinformation\, and contribute to a more sustainable\, low-carbon built environment. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Understand the operating principles of heat pumps and their importance in advancing decarbonization and occupant health\, safety\, and welfare.\n2.Analyze the range of heat pump technologies and determine how to apply them effectively in various building types and climates.\n3. Evaluate common misconceptions and design challenges related to heat pump performance\, efficiency\, and climate suitability.\n4. Develop strategies for design teams to integrate heat pump technologies into zero-carbon design approaches that enhance building performance and resilience. \nPresenter\nRich Peske is a Senior Consultant Manager at Willdan with over 25 years of experience in architecture and sustainability\, working on projects across the U.S. and Canada. He is passionate about high performance\, cost-effective design and collaborates with project teams to improve building performance and reduce carbon emissions through careful energy analysis. Rich regularly shares his knowledge on energy efficiency and decarbonization at AIA events and directly with architecture firms. \n

SUMMARY:Advancing Building Decarbonization Through High Performance Measures (1 LU|ZNCD)
DESCRIPTION:The importance of energy efficiency in the built environment has become well accepted over the past few decades. Significant advances have been made in design practices\, codes\, and technology that contribute to improved building energy efficiency. Despite these advances\, there remains urgency in making additional gains in energy efficiency to advance building decarbonization and address climate change. \nThis session will review how establishing specific energy goals at the design stage for a project and implementing emerging high-performance measures provide significant additional opportunity for built environment energy efficiency gains and decarbonization. Technologies across the building envelope\, mechanical system and end uses will be reviewed\, highlighting how intentional design choices can drive these advancements. \n  \nAbout Our Speaker\nRich Peske is an Energy Project Manager at Willdan with over 25 years’ experience in architecture and sustainability\, and a diverse portfolio of work across the United States and in Canada. As an energy consultant with a keen interest in high performance and cost-effective design\, he collaborates with project teams to optimize building performance and reduce carbon emissions using a variety of comparative\, analysis-based methods. Rich is a frequent presenter on topics related to energy efficiency\, carbon reduction\, and energy analysis at AIA and other industry events as well as directly to architecture firms. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rethinking Net Zero: Designing for Energy Balance in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this Virtual Lunch & Learn in partnership with AIA Los Angeles. All registered attendees will be sent a Zoom Link in the Event Confirmation email 24 hrs prior to the event. \n  \nEvent Details\nFor over two decades\, architects have championed the concept of ‘net-zero’ in sustainable design. However\, with the rapid growth of renewable energy sources like solar and wind\, the grid’s dynamics have evolved. As we approach 2030\, it’s time to question if net-zero is still the ideal goal or if a more nuanced approach is needed. The grid’s challenge lies in maintaining a delicate balance between energy generation and consumption\, requiring adjustments to match demand. This session explores how buildings can play a pivotal role in this equilibrium\, offering insights into building-grid interactions and redefining energy goals for the future. Architecture serves as a catalyst for innovation in energy efficiency and sustainability\, offering solutions that not only reduce energy consumption but also contribute to the resilience and adaptability of our future energy infrastructure. By embracing a holistic approach to design and planning\, architects can drive meaningful change in shaping a more sustainable and equitable energy future. \n  \nSpeaker\n \nVinoth Sekar\, PMP\, CEM\, WELL AP\, LEED AP BD+C – Senior Project Manager\, Willdan \nVinoth Sekar is a Senior Project Manager at Willdan\, where he leads the implementation and operations of utility demand-side management programs across multiple states. With over 12 years of experience in energy consulting\, he specializes in high-performance building design\, decarbonization strategies\, and energy efficiency program delivery. He works closely with utilities\, design professionals\, and building owners to achieve energy efficiency goals through HVAC system optimization\, operational carbon analysis\, and life- cycle cost evaluations. His expertise also includes grid-interactive buildings\, renewable energy integration\, and helping clients navigate the transition to electrification and sustainability. Vinoth currently serves as Chair of the USGBC Iowa Board and as a Board Member at Anawim Housing\, supporting affordable housing initiatives. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Anna University in Tamil Nadu\, India\, and a Master of Science in Energy Systems from Northeastern University.\n \n  \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the evolution of renewable energy sources and their impact on the energy grid.\nEvaluate the effectiveness of the ‘net-zero’ concept in contemporary architectural design.\nExplore the pivotal role of architecture in reshaping energy infrastructure and advancing sustainability goals.\nDevelop strategies to integrate building-grid interactions for optimizing energy efficiency and resilience.\n\n  \n
